ROMAN STATES 1866 PAPAL ARMS 2b GREENISH WHITE & ITALY 20c BLUE VICTOR EMMANUEL II, ON PIECE. Fragment of letter sent from Monte S. Martino, Marche, to Rome, franked with Italy 20c on 15c blue type II, Scott #34a, Sassone #24, tied by illegible Italy numeral cancellation and Roman States 2 bajocchi greenish white, Scott #3, Sassone #3Aa, tied by grill cancellation, both stamps ‘in perfect condition,’ framed straightline dispatch postmark ’M.S.MARTINO,’ transit Aug 3, 1866, Macerata, and arrival Aug 7, 1866, Rome CDS. According to the cert, stamps of Italy were generally available in Marche beginning Oct. 1, 1860, the postage rate for a single rate letter anywhere within Italy, and was 20 centesimi, and the 2 bajocchi stamp was affixed upon arrival for postage due within the Roman States, 'probably for forwarding to another address.’ (2007 Sismondo Cert) (Estimate 1500 US$)
