Calcutta ship letter to Hong Kong 1843
Hong Kong, 1843 (2 Dec.) entire letter datelined “Barque Cynthia off Kedgeree Den”, India to Captain Graves, American ship “Thomas Perkins” care of Peele, Hubbard & Co., Manila “pr Rob Roy” with endorsement on reverse “Care of A. Heard & Co., Canton” showing very good “Hong Kong Post Office” Royal Arms oval h.s. in red and on reverse Calcutta Bearing “2 as (annas)” framed d.s. in red (4.12). Carried up the Hooghly River to Calcutta, this letter was sent via Hong Kong through a forwarder in Canton to a second agent in Manila and is the earliest known cover to Manila via the Hong Kong Post Office, as well as an early example of Indian postage collected in Hong Kong and the only recorded example of the Hong Kong Arms to the Philippines.
