Great Britain “De La Rue London, Two Pence”,...

Great Britain “De La Rue London, Two Pence”, “Dummy stamp” hand-painted essay, the head a die proof printed on white glazed card, 92x60mm, the remainder of the essay (including the inscription, value and corner letters “BH/HB”) entirely hand-painted in shades of mauve, the card dated “6 AUG 84”. Essays and die proofs of dummy stamps in various designs were laid before the 1884 stamp committee, all with the inscription “De La Rue London” and corner letters “HB”. Wiseman records seven handpainted essays (see table 50, page 196) including one other 2d essay in green dated 6. Aug 84, but not this essay. Small tear at right edge and light crease well away from the essay, the painted design with central pin hole and a few small pin scrapes at the base, otherwise fine. An important and unique essay, superbly hand-painted. S.G. £8,500.
