China, 1897 (1 Mar.) envelope to Kowloon Customs care of the Hong Kong Post Office (4.3), showing bilingual “Paid” h.s. in brown with “Kiungchow Customs/Mail Matter” oval h.s. and “Customs/Kiungchow” double-ring origin d.s. in black, “Hong Kong/B” arrival c.d.s. on reverse, very fine and extremely rare. From the Elling O. Eide collection. Estimate HK$ 80,000 - 100,000 ONLY FIVE ENVELOPES ARE RECORDED WITH THE KIUNGCHOW CUSTOMS MAIL MATTER HANDSTAMP IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE “PAID” BILINGUAL HANDSTAMP. The addressee is J. Kirkwood, who joined the Customs Coast staff in May, 1872, and died, while serving as its Senior Engineer, aboard the revenue ship “Chuentiao” on 5 February 1905. There are four similar envelopes from this correspondence addressed to the “R.S. ‘Likin’, Kowloon Customs and Post Office or Kowloon Dock c/o I.M. Customs Kowloon, Hong Kong”.
