Austria 1850/54, machine-made paper 9 kr. blue with good to large margins, tied by black date stamp “WIEN 27/11” to letter sheet with part of the contents to Calcutta, India, showing on reverse transit mark of Triest, blue transit mark of Alexandria and “CALCUTTA STEAM LETTER bearing” with adjacent manuscript “A8”; the cover was paid until Triest with the 9 krezer stamp for the German Postal Union fee and with additional 9 kreuzer in cash for the sea postage to Alexandria; the remaining postage for the route beyond Alexandria of 8 anas = 1 shilling had to be paid by the recipient; some toning, otherwise fine. One of only 3 first issue letters known to India. A remarkable item; certificate Prof. Ferchenbauer VÖB (2009).
