China, 1894 Dowager Empress : 1895 (15 Mar.) registered envelope (“Custom House/Chefoo” embossed seal on flap) to London (29.4) bearing Dowager Empress 1ca. to 24ca., bright colours, cancelled by Chefoo seals, matching “Customs/Chefoo” double-ring origin d.s. and “Customs/Shanghai” double-ring transit d.s. (17.3) in blue (both on reverse), and France “Chine” 25c. (2, one has perf. faults at foot due to application at edge of envelope), cancelled by “Shang-hai/Chine” c.d.s. (22.3), showing “Registered” large oval h.s. of Chefoo and “R” in octagonal h.s. of the French Post Office, both in red, adjacent, with “Modane a Paris” (27.4) and “Registered/London” (29.4) c.d.s., both also in red, fine, fresh and an attractive franking with the complete issue.
