HELIGOLAND: 1877, 3 Pf. (Mi.No. 17 b) as single franking on a so-called PILGER-CARD. Only a handful of these important rarities of Heligoland philately are known to date. A so-called „Pilger-card“ has also to be considered as a historic key piece of the UPU philately. Some details for explanation: In Juni 1879 the postmaster of Heligoland, Mr. Pilger, ordered a very small number (the exact figure is unknown) of „HELIGOLAND“ imprinted postcards to be additonally printed on the backside as follows: HELIGOLAND, June 1879 (To the public) Herewith I wish to inform you that starting from July 1 the postage regulations of the U.P.U. will be applied for mails between Heligoland and Germany and Austria-Hungary. From that date on postage will be as follows: Post cards = 10 Pf. Letters per 15 grams = 20 Pf. Printed matters per 50 grams = 5 Pf. etc. etc etc. Insufficiently prepaid post cards will not be sent at all. For insufficiently prepaid letters the double postage rate will apply. (manuscript) Pilger And thus the first official announcement relating to UPU matters which was sent to the public was born. (Heligoland joined the „Union Postal Universal“ on July 1, 1879). We are happy to present such a historical gem for the first time – it surely can be considered as a „giant“ of Heligoland philately as well as of the worldwide highly esteemed UPU philately. Quality rating: PERFECT in every aspect.
