SAN MARINO (621 var) 1965 ROOKS ON CHESSBOARD 200L MULTI, RED INVERTED ERROR, BLOCK. RARE block of 4 of this scarce modern error, likely UNIQUE as block. Only one sheet of 40 known with this error, top right corner margin block. Red color was inverted causing three rooks to appear upside down below the chessboard, leaving three ‘ghost’ rooks on the board. Apparently several were used before the error was noted, and an incomplete census states this is the only recorded block. Signed in pencil by Alberto Diena and Luigi Raybaudi. MINT never hinged, very fine. This is the first Chess topical stamp that does not honor a particular player or event. Also includes 'Chesstamp Review’ #157 (2015) with this block on the front cover. Two singles at auction about five years ago hammered $6,000 and $7,000. (1968 Alberto Diena Cert) (Sassone #699a for singles €30000=US$33967) (Estimate 35000 US$)
