Earliest First Issue Cover An exceptional double rate domestic cover sent from Reykjavik 25.3 1873 to Svalbardi with a beautiful arr. pmk “GRENJAÐARSTAÐUR 17.4” which was the nearest post office. Apart from being the earliest recorded cover with skilling stamps it is also unique as the only domestic double rate cover. It has full contents and the 8 skilling stamp has an excellent canc. “REYKJAVIK 25.3” and one round corner perf. Cert. Møller. ONE OF THE GREATEST ICELANDIC ITEMS Provenance: Indridi Palsson Page 2 The First Overland Route It is quite certain that the skilling stamps were delivered to the postal clerks in Reykjavik at the end of 1872. However, due to winter the stamps were barely used until the first regional posts left Reykjavik in the days 25th - 27th 1873. This cover was carried by the first overland inland service of 1873, THE NORTHERN POST bound for Djupivogur via Akureyri, which departed from Reykjavik on the 26th of March 1873.
