Peru. Incoming Mail. 1789 circa. Undated envelope from Rome (faint handstamp in black on front) to Arequipa, carried via Barcelona where the “Italia” straight-line was struck, transmitted overland to Corunna and handstamped “España” (Kouri type I) before being carried by maritime transatlantic means. The route followed was denoted with the “Por la Coruña-Buenos Ayres-Perú” endorsement, involving Potosi for the inland carriage in South America. The earliest cover recorded, originating from any Italian State, bearing the “España” postmark. Ex Camino.
