SUPERB PRINTED PICTORIAL LETTER-SHEET SHOWING “CITY [RAIL] TERMINUS” + STEAM-ENGINE WITH UNIQUE DUBLIN “AUSTRALIAN MAIL/PAID” D.S.; Remarkable 10 Oct. 1856 EL (interesting family contents; some creasing and slight reinforcing of folded corners, but complete) from “Tarrangower” (a country house about 100 miles NW of Melbourne) to Dumfries “Per firs [sic] mail”; it was posted in “MELBOURNE” (fine oval 15 Oct. d.s. on flap) with Victoria 6d Orange (4m; small repair to cover alongside but not affecting the stamp) just tied by the Melbourne “1” barred Numeral with red h.s. “1d” Accountancy Mark (1d due to GB) alongside but also having a superb strike of an apparently otherwise unrecorded Dublin “AUSTRALIAN MAIL/PAID” d.s. nearby; this Dublin d.s. was used because the ship that carried this letter - the clipper ‘Montmorency’ was blown off course off the Irish coast so that the mails were exceptionally landed at Dunmore East and the letters sorted in Dublin. [At least one other cover from this voyage - ex N.S.W. - is recorded but it was addressed to Ayr and has only the normal “PAID/LIVERPOOL/SHIP” d.s., which suggests that only mail was sorted and marked in Dublin.] We are not aware of any other example of this spectacular Dublin datestamp having been recorded. As if to 'gild the lilly’ the contents are headed by a really spectacular and rare printed view of “The City Terminus of the M. & H.B. Railway Compy. 1854” [Melbourne & Hobson’s Bay Railway] with “S.T.G.” artist’s initials [Samuel Thomas Gill, 1818-80] and “CAMPBELL & FERGUSON LITH. JAMES L.
