China 1882, large dragon wide margins 3 Ca. brown red tied by blue seal “Peking” to small western style cover w. o. reverse blue “I. G. OF CUSTOMS PEKING MAR 29 82”. Adressed to Herrn Carl Wolter c/o Meyer&Co. Tientsin with pencil transcription “Mee Yeeh”. Meyer & Co. was established 1866 in Hong Kong by Hamburg merchants Hermann Constantin Eduard Meyer (1841-1926) and his brother H. D. Johannes Meyer. In 1873 they opened a branch in Tientsin under Meyers business partner, Carl Andreas Wolter (1858-1916). More branches followed at Hamburg (1877), London (1883), Shanghai, Hankow, Antung, Chinan and Tsingtao, also in Korea where Wolter became manager in charge: Chemulpo (1884), Pusan (1886) etc. The chinese name of the company was “Mee Yeh Yang Hong” with trade names “Golden Dragon” and “Upon Novels.” E. Meyer was honorary korean consul in Hamburg/Germany 1886/1906. The Meyer company exists in Hamburg until today. - Less than a handfull of inland covers with large dragon 3 Ca. single used from Peking are recorded. A comparable cover dated 1882.10.22 (Interasia 2016 #352 real. HK$ 276.ooo) and another, also to Meyer&Co. 1885.1.29 (James B. Whang sale, Christies 1994 #1829) are noteworthy. This cover is a new find, from a part of Meyer&Co. correspondence which came to light in September, 2016
