India, 1841 Entire letter to London, written by a pensioner formerly in the East India Company forces claiming prize money for the capture of the American schooner “Mary” of Boston off La Guayra in 1814. The address panel headed “From Bernard McCann, Hon. Compys Pensioner, Vellore” and countersigned by the Fort Adjutant in charge of Pensioners, Vellore, allowed at the soldiers concession rate with circular “SOLDIERS & SEAMANS LETTER / 4 / BY SHIP” (Rob In7a, a little overinked). Backstamped red oval “VELLORE / FREE”, Madras G.P.O and Out Station Ship Letter, and at London. Part upper flap missing, otherwise fine and a good example of the scarce 4d charge (2d unpaid soldiers rate and 2d ship letter gratuity). Photo on Page 114. £600-700 (via Philasearch.com: Argyll Etkin Worldwide Stamps and Postal History - Los 9350-A201210-658)
