United States Postmaster Provisional New York 1845: 5 c. black on blueish wove paper, touched at upper right, otherwise good margins all round and sheet margin at right, initialed ‘ACM’ in magenta ink (partially removed) and cancelled by black penstrokes on folded circular (July 31, 1845) with NEW YORK 5 PAID JUL 31 cds in red alongside, endorsed ‘str. Brittannia’, London transit in red (Aug 16) on reverse, French framed ‘Colonies etc. Art. 12’ and entry cds ANGL. BOULOGNE 18 AOUT 1845 in red alongside, Paris transit and Marseille arrival (Aug 21) cds’s on reverse. The cover was taxed with 21 Décimes for the journey from New York harbor to Marseille as the Postmaster Provisional paid just to the steamer. Address partly altered, second earliest known example of the rarest use of a New York Postmaster Provisional, i.e. from New York to Europe. A fine cover. Cert.
