Austrian Levant 1846 (May 26): Entire letter, vinegar splashed and with two slits for disinfection due to Cholera outbreak, mailed from the Sardinian Consulate in Alexandria to Syra, Greece and struck with very fine strike of oval framed AGENZIA DEL LLOYD AUSTRIACO / ALEXANDRIA in bright blue (Tchilinghirian fig. 3). Charged 18 kreuzers on reverse in crayon alongside Sardinian Consular cachet in black, rated ‘20’ (kreuzer) in manuscript for a single letter on front. An extremely rare entire. Note: The Lloyd Office in Alexandria was sub-servient to the Consular Office which helps to explain the rarity of this marking, found used only in 1846. Provenance: Collection Emile Antonini (lot 32134) and Kurt Wolfsbauer.
