China (Manchukuo), 1932 (22 Aug.) “American Board Mission, Hopei, Tientsin, China” corner card envelope to U.S.A. bearing first issue 2f., 4f. (2), 15f. and 30f., cancelled by “Shenyang/(Moukden)” bilingual c.d.s., with Chinese year “21” altered to “1” for the new Manchukuo dating system, very fine and scarce early usage. Ex Robert Farquhar collection. From the Dr. Bruce J. Lewin collection. Estimate 4,000 - 5,000 One of the earliest foreign mail covers from Manchukuo, and a fine example of the short—lived “International Postal War” less than a month after the puppet state issued its first stamps. Manchukuo was never allowed to join the U.P.U., and, in the beginning, its stamps were not accepted by most member countries, especially those which vehemently protested Manchukuo’s establishment, such as the United States. For this reason, the sender used an envelope clearly marked with the address of his American office in Tientsin. Lot condition Dealer
